Uniden MHS050-2 VHF Marine Radio Set | Marine Electronics

I just tested the Uniden MHSO 50 Marine Radio set against the higher priced Uniden Atlantis Model which I also own. The Atlantis comes in with a rating of 5 watts VS the lower 3.5 Watts on the on the MHSO 50. The Atlantis does have the weather radio function which is very nice to have. Here is the biggest surprise the MHSO 50 transmits and received out to the very same distance and it was clearer. In my test both only worked to 1.5 miles which maybe shorter than you expect. I have had several Atlantis in the past and with hand held radios 1.5 miles is pretty much what you get. I have tested the battery on both and after 8 hours of standby it still showed 80%. So battery life on either is very good. You get 2 Uniden MHSO 50 Marine radios for about the price of one Atlantis. The other advantages to the Uniden MHSO 50 are that it is clearer, lighter, smaller, waterproof and floats. If you need 2 radios and don't need the weather radio then these is the way to go.

Just purchased to use in Baja in hopes they would work 1 mile apart... no go... totally bummed. I should have expected them not to work over 200 yards. Spend the extra money and get something that works. These will be good for my 4 year old kid to play with... time to order some real radios. :((((

I bought these as a main radio set for my boat, but the range is quite limited we tested in an urban environment and got a reliable 1.5 miles or so back and forth. Its handy for dockside talking back and forth and such, but i wouldn't say to trust these several miles out into the water. I will be using these as a boat to boat mainly and get a real 30-45 W unit in each boat for safety.
